Short Ram Intakes

This may not be a really new question but are the short ram intakes I see on ebay such as this one any good?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=38634

Its not a really complicated part (tube and filter) so if this is worth buying, what would I be getting by shelling out 65 for an AEM short ram?

Another thing. I was talking to one of my friends and he said that any horsepower or torque gain would be almost unnoticeable, if any. Is it even worth putting this on? Would a K&N filter be a better choice?

Thanks for answering a noobies question.

Re: Short Ram Intakes

ya it would be worth it because all of the power adds up. All of the power gained would go right to the crank. if you get a good intake you might be able to feel a little more pull. If you keep adding more parts the hp and tor keeps going up.

Re: Short Ram Intakes

yes the TQ and HP gains are quite un-noticeable.. but they are there... it's not like strapping on a turbocharger.. although you will feel a slight difference in throttle response, and control. me I just went and bought a bombzracing CAI for my accord for $30 I've had it in my car for over a year. Still looks nice, and the car is still running strong.

Even though the hp and tq gain isn't very much it just looks nicer then having a really ugly black box.

I would not reccomend it I have a friend who threw a rod in his GSR because he had a cai on it and sucked up water on a really rainy day. And this is in Arizona with the AEM bypass valve on it, which by the way is a piece of sh*t.

Re: Short Ram Intakes

I put an AEM bypass valve on my CAI and seemed to run fine threw a couple of snowy days. How do you know when your sucking water into your intake?

Re: Short Ram Intakes

By the way Gafoto

If your going with the Short Ram intake make sure you buy a heat shield along with it to protect the air filter from high engine temperatures. I don't know how affective heat shields are but they must sell them for some reason.

the heatshields really do help. im too cheap for them so i used aluminum foil pans(those disposable ones) but works the same way.
how i tested it was down this small empty road and after the engine was fully warmed. without some sort of heatshiled i could only reach about 80-90 before i had to slow down. with the heat shield i was able to get over 90mph each time(around 100mph, fastest was like ~105mph).

The engine will sputter when you accelerate and you will not go anywhere. I have heard that they had a recall on there bypass valvels a while back because they where breraking and pieces where getting suck into the throttle body. I used to have one and it split in two but luckily it didn't do any damage.

any gains that you feel from a short ram are simply placebo...most stock air boxes are made in such a way that it creates turbulence through the intake and in doin so results in greater dispersion of the air fuel mixture in the combustion chamber ... better dispersion ... better atomization. imo .. get the k&n and leave the stock airbox on .

Re: Short Ram Intakes

I love my short ram. I've got a stock '94 Civic CX (70hp of nothing) and I can feel the better throttle response. I definently can't feel any power difference at all. But when I mash the pedal I can feel the little power that I have, a lot better.

PLACEBO - you think its faster or better responding ... so it is ... look it up.

... and it thought at cx was 105hp or about so. 70 ???

Re: Short Ram Intakes

No. I know how hard I push on the throttle and I watch my tach (I have a huge 5" that I can't miss). And I've driven this car for the past year, and only driven this car. So I know that I felt a better throttle response. When I first put it on I expected not to feel anything at all, but I did. And I said that I got no power from it at all (at least none that I could tell).
In Canada, the CX has the same engine as the DX/LX models, but here in the US the CX has a puny 70hp motor. And it only has 8 valves.
