gear shifter change

97 JGC Laredo 4.0L I6

I'd like to change my gear shifter knob to an aftermarket one, anyone know the easiest way without demolishing anything?

Re: gear shifter change

Has anyone ever changed one before? The new one I have looks easy to install, but I just don't know how to get the old one off without damage.

Re: gear shifter change

I think you have to take the whole thing off handle and shaft, I know on GM (at least older GM)products the they hae a little clip (kinda like a snap ring) that you pry out of the handle and then lift the handle straight off the lever, but I checked on my jeep and the jeep doesn't have this clip, therefore I think the handle is glued to the lever.

I think you're right because I looked at mine as well and it wouldn't budge and no clip. I guess I would have to change out the whole shifter knob shaft as well if I want an aftermarket one. That's probably to much work.

Re: gear shifter change

Know of any tips or tricks? Is there wires inside that connect to the push button that would or could break by pulling it off? The new aftermarket shifter knob has a push button on it to switch gears. Its a straight up and down knob, not a T or L shape knob like my factory one. What kind of troubles am I looking at?
