Do I have this right??

What is wrong with the young dudes these days?
I live near ASU in Phoenix- yesterday, while driving close to the campus, I saw a guy, maybe 19-20 yrs old standing by his car. His eclipse had a flat tire, and he was standing outside of the car, looking at it, while talking on his cell phone. Ahem,....WTF?
He looked like a regular sort of dude, and was definitely big enough to have the strength to change his own tire.

Then today, a girl that I work with, no more than about a buck-05, makes a point to tell me how proud she is of herself that she changed her own flat tire over the weekend.

What gives?? I'm very glad that she didn't have to be stranded on the road and such, but man, something sure looks a little shaky about the whole picture.....

Re: Do I have this right??

I hear you! I have Roadside Assistance on all my vehicles but if i have a flat or dead battery i do it myself and dont even call them. On the other hand, i told my wife to call them and keep her hand on Senor pistola until they arrive. Too many weirdos out there.
The fact that you are right by a University may also have something to do with it. He was probably on 3-way with his mom and dad, who bought him the car, trying to figure out what to do.

Re: Do I have this right??

Maybe he couldn't get at his spare??? When I got my car there was a speaker box right over the spare tire and there was no way I could get it out by myself. Which is why I took it out.

I cant change a tire...not that we're surprised by my lack of car knowledge or anything. When ever I have a problem, I just call one of my friends or brothers and they tell me what to do or come fix it. Usually its just sit in the car with the doors locked until someone can come take care of it...but hey, I can pretend to look like I know what I'mdoing..open up the hood look around...thats about it.

I can do alot on my own. But my of my body the doctor says it is not the best idea to be dicking around with tires etc. That and I am too lazy. Last time I had a flat I got pissed off and in my rage broke a stud. Then I was even more ticked off that I needed to order a stud and lug. Costed 100 dollars to fix a 15 dollar issue.

Re: Do I have this right??

Fucks sake.

Changing a tyre is the easiest thing in the world, what's wrong with people?

note: not a dig at anyone who can't actually do it because of back problems etc, but just plain saying "i can't do it" is just laziness.

c'mon, if wonder woman can't change a tire then who can?

seriously though, have you ever tried? i'd bet you could do it if it was absolutely necessary.

Re: Do I have this right??

I did it for this woman the other day.

Stupid bitch drove over a gutter completely unneccesarily and blew her FR tyre. She then started to freak out so I jacked up her car and changed the whole thing for her. 10 mins out of my day and she doesn't even say thank you. Another 5 mins just to wash all the crap off my arms.

Some people...

It may be easy, if you know how to do it, but what if you don't. You wouldn't want to screw up your car. I've had people i know ask how to change the oil in their car. The guy that asked me has a riced out Civic and it kind of surprised me, but at the same time i expected it.

I think the main problem is that some people are just lazy. My parents, not to imply that they're lazy, would call RoadSide Assistance. If you pay for it already, why not use it. "It is easier to pay to have someone do it for you" is the motto that a lot of people live by.

Re: Do I have this right??

Maybe this dude was one hardcore steet-racer and so he removed his spare tire for weight saving, along with the rear seats and carpet. Just a thought, or maybe he doesn't know how to change a tire because he did not have previous experience. My host sister did not know that she had to put air into tires and she has been driving for two years, so......I can imagine. (I call her my host sister because they hosted me for one year for my student exchange program, so she is not my natural sister. Shes not a blonde either, which I'm really suprised.)

Re: Do I have this right??

OK....right, everyone. I could be wrong about this guy- and probably am.

it just seems a bit weird, how I pick up a vibe these days that it's not cool for guys to learn how to do that kind of stuff- like someones' going to think that they're a redneck or a lumberjack just because they can change their own tire.... sheez.

Granted, i've lived in large cities for the past several years, where you're far more likely to find that kind of attitude, but I swear, some people take it as far as thinking that you're a macho jerk if you're a guy and decide to think for yourself or get your hands dirty.

manual labour,so demeaning.Send out a grease monkey, if he doesn't make my seat dirty and is suitably subservient,I'll give him a dollar tip....

Remember, now it's cool to be a pretty-boy.

Oh, sorry, sorry.
