Fuel Gauge

I've got a 2000 GMC Safari SLE and the fuel gauge does not seem to read correctly. It shows a quarter tank and it starts to sputter and die. I tried filling it (I'm not sure how big the tank is) and when the pump shut off, I topped it off.
When I checked the gauge, it read just over 3/4 tank. Otherwise, the thing runs fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like the fuel float is not returning to its original position . so you have two options 1. take it to a shop and have them repair it or 2. deal with it and remember the needle position when its almost out of gas.!!!
