99 GA Starting Problems

I resently acquired a 99 Grand AM GT with the 3.4 V6 with 107,000 miles. It seems to run pretty good, but lately when I start it when the engine is hot, it dies after a second. Then I'll try again with the same results. I find that if I hold the accelerator down a little I can get it to stay alive. It idles fine after a second or so, and starting it cold is just fine. Any suggestions or solutions? Thanks!

Re: 99 GA Starting Problems

I had something similar, but exactly the same happen. Changing the airflow sensor worked for me. Turned out the sensor was shot, so the throttle wasn't opening on startup. Mine would die hot or cold, though. Have you hooked up an OBD-2 scanner to check for codes?

Re: 99 GA Starting Problems

The engine light has never come on.. Therefore I would think no codes.... Could be wrong though. Guess it wouldn't hurt to run over to autozone to have them scan it.... Thanks.

Almost sounds like the ignition switch.

Re: 99 GA Starting Problems

The exact same thing has recently become a problem with my 99 GA GT. Sometimes it will die on startup over and over until I hold the accellerator down (and the brake) and shift it into gear. I believe there could be a number of things wrong with the car such as the mass air flow sensor, fuel pressure regulator, exhaust gas recirculator, or throttle position sensor that could cause this type of problem. It is hard to narrow it down because I am sure you have set no codes (no light) just like me. However, I would recommend you pull the idle air control motor first and see if it is dirty. I cleaned mine with some carb cleaner and a paper towel and it seems to have done the trick for now, and it was the cheapest fix since it wasn't damaged.
