1985 Toyota pick up problem

Hello newby here. Happy new year everyone.
Just bought a 1985 Toyota 4x4. 178,000 miles for $750.00 from my brother who had gotten it new nearly 20 years ago. I havent hardly driven it at all yet. I wanted to flush the radiator and change the coolent fluid. While doing so, idle slowed down then started running rough and blowing black soot smoke out the tail pipe (think that is a carburator problem).
I am concerned about smoke coming up from the rear most part of the engine. I am certain it's from oil burning. I thought it might be a blown head gasket, but there is no water in the oil. Could it still be? Is there any other less major gaskets back there at the rear part of the engine it could be? I hope so. I hope it is not a cracked block . While I was flushing the radiator, the engine defantly did NOT get hot. But it did start doing this then and wasn't doing it before that I was aware. The engine is a Toyota 22R four cylinder.

do a compression test. water and oil are just one thing that could happen if the head gasket were to blow. valve cover gaskets get hard and start leaking. are you sure you didnt over heat the motor????

It ran rough upon acceleration but smooth after up to speed. After it warmed up it idled too fast but smooth, now it idles rough and black smoke comes out the pipe, not really continous but at a regular beat. Someone said sounds like possibly a cracked ring. Reguarding the riseing smoke from the back of the engine, I like to think it's just the valve cover gasket leaking back there but the smoke appears to be origonating from lower than the valve cover gasket. I suppose oil might still be comeing from there and running down then burning lower down. It's difficult to see back there. I'll try to see from under neith after warm up. I'm certain the engine did not get hot but I'm wondering if when the cold water entered the engine while it was at close to operating temperature it might have done something. I allready was concerned about that so after draining it at operating temp, I let it sit about 5 to 10 minutes before filling it again with water but that might not have been long enough .

maybe the ex manifold is leaking, from what everyone knows, blue smoke is oil, black is unburned fuel, white is water. hmmm? i'm gonna think on this one. but devinatly sounds like you're carb might need some attension see if you're egr is call clogged up. i bet it is. mine was and it wasnt producing black smoke.

The valve cover gasket may be leaking oil on the manifold or exhaust system. Doing a full tune-up might be a good idea.
compression check
valve adjustment
plugs (see what they look like. black and sooty means running rich or burning oil)
wires
cap and rotor
oil change
air filter
new valve cover gasket (use some gasket sealer on the flat edge of the two half-round rubber pieces, common place they leak)
check belts and hoses (if you are going to flush the cooling system, make sure the heater is on while doing this)
battery connections
change transmission and diff oil
Inspect brakes, bushings, suspension, u-joints, exhaust system and hangers, tires (don't forget the spare).
talk to your brother and ask him what problems he was starting to have (fuel economy, oil useage). Ask him what he has had serviced or replaced. Vehicle history can be helpful in diagnosing problems and in preparing a service and repair schedule.

Good news. A machanic took a look and said the carb is dumping too much fuel because it is lacking some kind of valve that can only be obtained from the dealer, thus explaining the black smoke. He also thinks the valve cover gasket is cause of the smoke from the back of the engine and recommended most of the things KimMG has listed above. Before this, I allready was priceing used and rebuilt engines. Thanks for you all's comments and suggestions. Domecq
