Weight difference has everything to do with that.
My 2001 Grand Am GT got hit 4 different times on the highway by a guy in a Jetta. $4000 worth of body damage, but no where near a total loss. We got hit 3 times in the rear, and once on the driver's side as he tried to pass/run us off the road.
Guy in the Jetta couldn't drive, ended up losing control after side-swiping us, and waxing the concrete barrier at 60 MPH.
