1995 Park Avenue cuts off

car engine stops when coasting to a stop and usually after freeway driving. Have been told it is the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid and I could check it out by unpluging solenoid and if the solenoid is the problem, the stalling will not occur while it is unplugged. Question: Please describe appearance and location of this solenoid. Is it harmful to drive the car with solenoid unplugged? 1995 Park Avenue ( 57000 miles ) 3.8 4 spd. THANKS bob

i have the same problem but it is becoming less frequent i still dont have a clue what it is but a guy (not a mechanic in anyway) told me that my fuel pump could be off because it happens more frequently at a quarter tank or less

I have a 94 Ultra, with turbo-boost, that has died on us three times in about a month. Fuel pump pressure was low by about 7-10 lbs, so we changed the fuel pump and the filter below the right rear door, and thought that did it. Yesterday, a week later, it died again. Of the three times, two were for sure when making a right-hand exit off the highway. (Slowing down affecting it?) Yesterday was with a full tank of gas, can't remember on the first two times. It will immediately start back up and run fine... till the next time.

Bob, from what I have learned, that clutch solenoid would most likely stop you from driving the car, because it would continue to stop it. We are figuring that's not the answer. The crankshaft position sensor might be it, since it controls the firing spark, but I have a problem with a component like that taking two or three days to "settle in" -- either it works or it doesn't. A gasket might take a few days to swell and seal, but it doesn't seem that a switch would do that.
Whatever it is, we're still looking.....

I have a Park Avenue 1999 and recently spent lots of money replacing non defective parts just to find out the similar problem is a sensor. The name is MAF (Mass air flow sensor). Look for a used one because a new from the dealer is expensive.

We threw a fuel pump at mine ('94 PA Ultra) and it died three days later. Have considered changing out the crank positioning sensor, but held up to see if bad fuel was the culprit. Thanks for this idea, I will check that TOMORROW.

I had the exact same symptoms and changed lots of parts only to find out that the problem was a crank shaft position sensor. It cost about $40 and is located behind the harmonic balancer. Good luck, Scott

Scott, thank fr your note -- this is what we are thinking in the problem,unless it was some bad fuel. So we got AAA in case, till we can change out the position sensor. Sorta un-nerving for the wife. We hope to change it out this week. Did your car continue to shut off? Ours did this three times in about 6 weeks, and hasn't given a single problem in at least a month.

Mine did this..worse even if I had been on the road less than 30 minutes below 40 degrees f....it was the hot wire Mass airflow sensor ..136.00 from Delco distributor.I see someone else posted same answer...

eespidie, I have the same problem with my 1993 Park Avenue. When I'm on the last 4 gallons of gas, hitting the brakes hard stalls the engine, and its can be difficult to get it started again. Almost feels like air is getting into the fuel lines. Already replaced filter, will probably check the pump soon. No problems on a full tank of gas....
