Just got a 00 4runner and heating control selector switch does nothing

I just bought an 00 4runner Sr5 and when you turn the dial that selects heat on upper vents, lower vents, defrost etc, nothing happens. The car has been in a front end accident and the dash was taken apart to install new airbags. I suspect that the rod on the back of the dial wasn't intalled correctly? There are also other indications that the dash wasn't put back together by an experienced tech here and there, ie light scratches and a squeeking sound. Is it easy to take the dash apart and put things back right or is it a nightmare like some cars? I worked at Toyota for a while and I know how to work on cars but before I rip the dash apart without a manual, is there anything I should know?
