Another turbo question

I have a 94 Ls and was wondering if there is any turbo kits which are street legal(by an emissions standpoint). I live in Texas and recently I got an inspection on my car. While I was talking to the guy,I asked him about leagality issues pertaining to exhaust and intake. He told me that whatever I do, it should be CARB compliant, because they will start doing emissions tests in late '05. I've seen Greddy Turbo kits but they are all for 96-00. I have a couple of friends with GS-R's who tell me that the Greddy kits are not that good. They say I should build my own. They say for the amount of money I would spend on the Greddy kit, I can buy all the parts for a self made kit and build up the motor. Can you guys tell me if this is true, or can you tell me of any kits or any parts I can use to stay legal.

you can make your own...no one has to know what you have under your hood....

you can build your own and it will be cheaper and probably make more power but it will not be carb legal. The greddy kit is carb certified and should pass inspection. and if you you build your own the emissions inspector will know whats under you hood!

I've looked for the Greddy kit and it says its only for 96-00. My car is a 94. If they have it, its for a GS-R. Do you guys know if the Rev Hard kits are legal?

Re: Another turbo question

how is a mechanic gunna know if it's a Greddy kit?? You can the same turbo on the market...and the manifold etc are easily exchangable. Do the kits say "Greddy" on them somewhere? My point being you could assemble a similar kit to the Greddy kit making approximately the same power for much cheaper.
From what I've found of the emissions boys in Texas they won't care as long as you pass the exhaust emissions test. Go to a small lower end shop and I doubt they'll think twice about it.

Well the concern that I have is ..Do turbo manifold usually come with a place to install the o2 sensor. That is what the inspector told me it has to have.

There is a carb certification number on every part that is certified street legal. Just because you pass the smog test doesn't mean it's legal. If you take your car to emissions and it has a turbo on it they are going to look for the carb certification number. I don't know how strict they are in Texas but if this guy lives somewhere like California, where I just moved from, and he puts a kit that is not carb certified on his car. They will impound his car and give him something like a thousand dollar fine. I would agree with building your own kit unless it is absolutely necessary that it is smog legal. Then you should go with a kit like Greddy. The reason the Greddy kit is so expensive, when it doesn't even make that much power, is because it is carb certified it is not cheap for them to get a kit carb certified.

Re: Another turbo question

Last I checked Texas didn't follow the CARB laws, has anyone heard differently?

well I just got my car inspected recently, and the inspector told me that in nov.2005, Texas will start doing emissions tests on vehicles, and it is mandatory that if the vehicle came with an o2 sensor installed, that it must be installed with no exceptions.

Re: Another turbo question

Texas already does emissions tests on vehicles, the o2 thing sounds new though.
