Jumpy oil pressure reading

1996 Yukon has 164,000 miles and 350 engine. Recently, at idle, the oil gauge has been quickly jumping back and forth between 20 - 40 psi. At highway speed it maintains a constant reading of 50 psi. I don't want to bring it to dealer without some idea as to cause of fluctuation. Your thoughts and similar experiences are appreciated.

Jumping gauge repaired

Finally brought my vehicle to local mechanic as had several other problems to address. Jumpy oil pressure reading was due to gauge sending unit and that fix was relatively "inexpensive". I don't hear that very often. Hooray! Mechanic said he sees a lot of Yukons - 350 engine is proven and dependable but many other problems associated with Yukons keep him busy (and happy).

I bought this Yukon new in '96 and keep it out of stubborness and lack of money. I firmly believe owning a Yukon (mine at least) is not for the faint of heart or empty of wallet. During first 30K miles I lost track of number of times I had to bring it to dealer for problems that were (thankfully) covered under warranty. I grew tired of hearing the words "We installed the new and improved part".

I do have one of the factory manuals (about 2.5" thick) and it has paid for itself numerous times. Heck, just directing me through the process of replacing several broken interior door handles has paid for the manual.

Good luck to all. Thank you for such an active forum.
