Dont need intake?

Not to be a complete idiot but I was watching this vid http://www.team-octane.net/images/dj...shthebeast.zip How can the car run like this? Without a filter and no CAS and the vpc on the valve cover open. I always see cars with no filter on the turbo and I dont understand it. That's not bad for the engine?

well for a daily driver this would be really bad cause yeah the engine would get really dirty and clogged up and screwd up. But for like a track run car it would cut seconds off because there would be no filter resistance on the air and yes some dust would get sucked in but its a track car so its only run one time and then its done daily drivers without a filter wouldnt work but a track car running it once would be ok.

Re: Dont need intake?

its fairly easy to do if your good with a dremle and have the funds for all the LED you will need, plus you have to take apart the taillights in half

Re: Dont need intake?

You will see most drag only cars run with no filter. In fact, the turbo often sticks up out of the hood or bumper so it is force fed, like Russ Cox's car. I still don't understand the point of that video though

No, I know. That's what I was talking about when I said I always see cars with no filter on the turbo. Like the Osofast 7? sec eclipse. Another one I've seen is a Grand National with twin turbos sticking out the hood. I mean what if someone's hand was near the hood and they slipped and ... slice! So do they just clean out the engine a lot or something? Or are they taking it apart after every race anyway so it's easy just to clean it out?
Don't get the point of the vid. What do you mean? The car in that vid didn't have all that stuff connected that I was talking about. It just confused me. There wouldn't be a vac leak or anything?

Re: Dont need intake?

Race motors dont tend to last long. Not like you need to get 150k miles out of them. So a little extra dirt in there is a small tradoff for a few more HP. The whole video was to show how long it takes that (presumably) BB turbo to stop spinning. Put 80 psi oil pressure on a regular turbo and it would do the same thing. No point to it, except to say look at me, I have a BB turbo and I'm a badass. If there is no cas there, it is either using the 95-96 style cas, or is running a standalone that uses something else. Only 1Gs and 97-99s have the cas on the passenger side of the head. Having the ports on the valve cover vented is fine, see the other thread on trying to avoid holding pressure in the crankcase.

Re: Dont need intake?

Two different things. The part of my post you quoted was about my opinion of that useless video. The part about the crankcase pressure is what is in another recent thread. You'll have to find it by searching or just reading through the recent topics.

As stated earlier, those motors live a short life anyway. And yes, they're getting torn down a lot and most fluids are being changed constantly. So as long as no one sticks they're fingers in it...:22yikes:

If you switched to a blow-through you could run without a filter on your daily driver. Although, there would be no point to that except to shorten your motors service life.

Re: Dont need intake?

Found one of my favorite examples of the no filter setup on a race car, from this site http://www.ddsm.org/vrcracing/

Specifically, this image http://www.ddsm.org/vrcracing/images...d/DCP_0816.JPG
