fuel filter in gas tank? 83 GMC

My 83 GMC van seems to runout of fuel when the tanks full, sit a while and runs okay. The filter in the carb. been replace pump works. I know that GM cars made in the 60's had a filter in the gas tank at the end of the pickup tube I fixed many cars by removing this filter. But this tank will have to be dropped to get the pick up out of the tank. I like to know to if GM still had a sock like filter at the end of the fuel pick up tube in the 80s?
before I try since I have no place to work on it. thanks robert erickson

Re: fuel filter in gas tank? 83 GMC

easy fix take and look at tank get an idea where sending unit is rip rug up cut hole in floor with air chisel,( wont creat sparks) about the size of half your computer keyboard, then remove sending unit that way. when you ar done replace metal with a larger peace and silicone sealer and some sheet metal screws if you dont want to do it this way you have to drop tank, by the way the old jeep wagoners had this type of access plate built in.
