torque steer normal?

okay i've noticed recenty since i've learned how to drive a manual. and now i can go fast. that when i pull out onto a road making a right there is massive torque steer to the right.

i tend to creep in first cause i don't want to spin, when i get to about 3k rpms i shift into 2nd and floor it. very noticablly the car veers to the right when flooring it in second. i have to correct of it will make me change lanes. when if i shift to 3rd it goes away. but i feel i'm shifting too fast and only keeping the rmps between 3 and 4k

also when trying to drive fast what rpms should i shift at? i know you should get into second real quick. but when should i shift to 3rd? when my friend was teaching me to drive a manual i tryed to drive fast when in second and got to about 5k rpms the engine was extremely loud and didn't sound normal to me. he was yelling shift!!! i was thinking i'm not near red line. ever since then i'm afraid to go above 5k rmps.

is it safe to shift from 2nd to 3rd at say 6k rmps? does the same apply for the other gears? someone explain why my car sounds like its having a heart attack at 5k rpms.

Torque steer is normal on a Wrong Wheel Drive. Even with AWD you will get it at some point. My car on a wet highway will just go sideways at 6500 in 3rd. Not like assend out sideways, like the whole car goes sideways. Really have to keep a grip on the steering wheel...

If you still have the stock turbo, you can find my shift points in posts from days gone by... Basically it was 7k-7500 in first, and about 6k in all subsequent gears. With a bigger turbo, even a 14b, you can go over 7k in all gears and not lose any time/mph. The valve train can make a lot of noise at high rpm, impossible to say from this side of my computer if yours is normal or not though. I have a couple bad lifters, and let me tell you they sound like shit at 6k, never mind 8k.

I know torque steer is normal, hell i had tourque steer on my 96 accord EX-R coupe. thats why i know what it is. i was just wondering why i have it in 2nd gear and why it goes away in 3rd. my accord only had it off the line and went away in second.

if someone just said its normal i'd be happy.

You take what advice is given to you... Dont think that just because he has AWD he doesnt know what torque steer is or why it happens! You need to be a little more respectful to the most knowledgable member on this forum or next time you wont have someone to give you answers!

Another thing, you never asked why you had it... You just stated you had it, reread your thread! The reason you get torque steer is you dont have LSD (limited slip diff) and one half shaft is shorter than the other (shorter one is easier to spin, expecially when all the weight is on one side of the car) so since the shorter one is on the right side the car pulls to the right.

If u wanna drive normally just shift around 3500rpm.
If u wanna drive fast shift around 6500rpm. That loud noise you hear is normal.

yes i just learned that the loud noise is the waste gate opening up letting exhaust out the system keeping the pressue around 10-11 psi

It can't really torque steer unless the tires are spinning. It goes away in the upper gears because you probably arent spinning the tires. Your GST can easily light them up in 2nd, so you will get torque steer in second. 3rd is a 110 mph gear, so it less likely you have enough power to torque steer in that gear until you have more power. Eventually you can get it in just about any gear. I remember my ex gf stomping on it in 4th with her Vortech supercharged Civic Si, and lighting up the tires at highway speeds. Which brings back another fond memory about torque steer. First ride after installing the supercharger I got on it in 1st gear from low rpm. At 5500 rpm it ripped the steering wheel right out of my hand. That was a real wake up call

yeah i hear you, my gst ripped the wheel right out of my hand the other day. kinda scary, but i was more just pissed. cause i'm used to it a little from the Accord EX-R, but i'm learning now that car was an absolute joke.

There isnt one specific RPM to shift at when you feel like 'driving fast' Do what you want, but the fastest possible is what Kevin has experienced: 7000 in 1st gear, 6000 in the rest with the stock turbo. It doesn't matter other than that. If you feel like it, you can shift at 7500 in every gear, it just won't be as fast as what Kevin said to do.

As for the wastegate, if you have stock exhaust, you should barely be able to tell that the wastegate opens. If your noise is loud over 4000rpm, it's not the wastegate. Also, if you floor it at 2500rpm in a gear that doesn't spin, you should hear the wastegate open then too.. the turbo spools that early.
