Please Help!!!
I have a 2000 z71 with 98k and it recently started making a terrible grinding/scraping sound when i drove. I posted the problem and learned of the parking brake issues that plague everyone. I took apart the parking brake setup on both sides and removed the shoes, at least until i get the new shoes and spring to "fix" the issue. once i got the truck back down, the sound was still there, except it was harsher. after checking everything, i've narrowed the sound to the transfer case. i still can't tell if its the front driveshaft or the rear, but when i go from drive to reverse or vice versa it engages pretty loudly. Then once i start driving there is a horrible grinding/clicking sound coming from the middle of the truck. the harder i accelerate the worse it gets. right now the truck is parked until i can figure out what it is. i've read about the infamous "clunking" but i don't know if this is it. what can i check for? i'm sorry if i've rambled but i'm just kinda ticked off right now. any help is appreciated.

Your best bet is to get it in and have it looked at. It could be any number of things, a bad u-jaint, something in the trans such as the planetary gears or the sun gears, possibly something in the transfer case......... too many possibilities to start taking guesses.

you can try engaging 4 wheel drive to see if it changes but given that it happen when you change from drive to reverse etc... Iwould suspect tranny issues. A first step would be to drop tranny pan and change fluid in transfer case; looking for metal in both fluids. The clunk is initial and shouldn't continue or would be likely from u-joint. This sounds worse (sorry).

make sure you can trust the tranny shop you take it to!! Trannys are very complex. I'm yet to find a tranny person I trust. I've had many of friends/family who have told stories of having tranny fixed but every 2 months or so they would keep taking it back because of warranty issues. Either same problem would keep happening or new issues popped up as a result of work done. Transfer cases aren't as complex but sounds like one of the two for sure. Good luck

Hey,
Im not sure if I can help, but I will try. When I had my 95 Dodge ram, I had what might be a similar sound (clunk and grinding). It was the snap ring in the transfer case. It was repaired once, and the sound came back about 8 months later, it was repaired again (under aftermarket warranty both times---can you believe that) and did not make the sound again. I finally traded it in, so Im not sure what happened after that. The guy at the dealership I bought the pick up from said that that transfer case which was also in the Silverado was prone to it. |

I just dropped it at the shop. I've had work done at this place before and many of my friends swear by them. But just like you said it's tough to find someone you can trust. We'll know soon enough.

I just got the truck back and everything sounds fine. It was the U-joints, replaced both of them on the rear driveshaft. The front U-joint was really startign to get worn, the rear only had a little play in it but I figured what the heck I'll change it anyway.
