Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
For those of you who are familiar with the Tyrrell Yamaha 023 (made by Tamiya, 1/20), do you know the particular shade, or combination of shades, of blue on the bodywork?
I'm talking about the main section of blue, not the lighter highlights on the mirrors and around the cockpit. In case you need a quick memory refresh, I'm talking about the middle kit in the pic below. ![]() Also, has anyone used the Museum Collection decals and seatbelt detail set on this particular kit? I just put my order in for one. Unfortunately the decals provided in the kit have some brownish discolouration to them, so I'll really need some new ones. Problem is that the aftermarket kits don't have the large blue section... which means it's masking time once again. Cheers, M |

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
I used Krylon True Blue but if you want to use Tamiya a 50/50 mix of TS15 Blue and TS44 Brilliant Blue would be good enough.

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
Veryon, aren't the TS colours in presealed pressure packs? Is it possible to mix them...?
Also, are you able to shoot a few pics my way of your finished kit, just for reference? ([email protected]) I'll take anything and everything you've got really, but in the end even just one reasonable closeup of the body colours would great. |

Yes, they are only in spray cans but you can spray some of each into a bottle and airbrush it on. If you can't just use TS15 Blue and it'll be fine.

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
I see you have the "Mild Seven" decals on, which aftermarket set did you use?
Oh, and thanks for the pics, they look great! Did you make any additions to the engine bay, or just leave it straight oob? |

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
I built that car so long ago I'm trying to remeber things about it.
Erm....the Mild Seven's were a decal sheet by a Japanese maker way back before Studio 27 was around, maybe Factory TZ or somebody like that printed them. I built it OOB. Something you might want to do is either put a whaite decal under the entire tamiya decal that goes around the cockpit or leave white paint under there because that decal is very thin so the blue shows thru it. Also the blue on the mirrors is one of the Mild Seven blues so you will have to come up with a color for those.

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
Yeah I plan to leave it all white, then simply mask up the blue areas as per the decals - basically cut the masking tape using the decals as a template.
So the cockpit decals should come up nicely. Here's hoping HLJ come up with the goods that I'm after - I'm finding it impossible to find any in-stock aftermarket decals for this kit! |

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
To anyone who knows... looking at the above pics, where the end-plates connect to the front wing, there are two holes. Now I'm assuming those are put there by Tamiya simply to aid in fitting the parts.
Does anyone know if this is correct? And the two holes aren't actually there on the real car? |

You could get this full sheet which includes Mild Sevens and the cockpit decal would be much better too.

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
I've actually gone with this particular set:
http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?MCLDC-112 I did see the one you mentioned above, but for a handfull of dollars extra I can get the full decal sheet, seatbelts, and a few etched parts as well. It is backordered however, so hopefully it won't take HLJ too long to get it in. Otherwise I'll be falling back on the decals you've linked to. Thanks for the help by the way, much appreciated! |

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
Museum Collection decals are nice and opaque but I have found them to be brittle.

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
I've read much the same on my research here actually. I'm willing to take the risk though. I don't build models very quickly, so I can afford financially to mess up the decals and buy a new set a month or so down the track.

Re: Tyrrell Yamaha 023 F1 colour question
Thanks CK21. Seems they don't mail their products outside the US, but I imagine someone here in Australia will be able to do something along similar lines.
