If you cat. converter is getting red hot it means too much unburn fuel is reaching the cat. Check your injectors - one of them may be leaking, excess fuel will cause a cherry red converter. Also, how old are your o2 sensors? I believe your car has two, one before the converter and one after. Bad o2 sensors could cause a rich condition.

Also, you changed your plugs and wires, but what condition are your coil packs in? I would do a spark test on each tower of the coil packs. White spark = good;
off colored brown or tan spark = weak.
