I am currently ending the 2 year process of finding that perfect car. I knew it had to be American, it had to be a V8 and it had to be a car that I would be proud, and able to drive everyday. i settled on a 1995 Cobra great choice I think. Heres my point though. I was recently reading an old forum on here where a guy said his four banger GTX would run as fast or faster than any mustang out there. I thought this to be very possible, and didnt doubt him for a minute. He then went on to say how it cost him the same amount to run 12's as what it would to build a Stang. My only question was..."Are you crazy?" Now I have some car knowledge, and one thing I know is a 4 banger will cost two times, maybe three times as much as the V8 to run 12's. But I might be wrong so I am asking what you guys think. Also I am 17 years old, and I am hoping that the American Muscle will long live, and that people are not converting to the Rice burning 4 cyclinders with NOS, and a Turbo. So please if you would give your opinion on both questions. Thanks

GTX? 4cyl? Huh? When you say GTX i think of the big, 70's plymouths...

I 4 banger may not be as expensive as everythinks they are. Ford has the Cosworth 4's that put down some serious power with a single turbo. ALso I do know of a few SVO's which are putting down 360hp+ to the wheels and are daily drivers. I also know the owners didn't spend much either, about $5000, between the engine and turbo. They run high 10's low 11's all day long and with SVO's that only weigh around 2200lbs, it was not hard for them to do. It basically comes down to how resourceful you are as a person that is building a car. I know for me to get into the 10's and still have a reliable engine, I'm gonna spend about $10k~$14K. I know I can get into the 10's for half the price, but I wouldn't be doing that on a daily driver. I am also not going to strip the car either, like some people. I plan to have the front seats replaced by aftermarket stuff and the rear seat delete kit, but other than that, I am keeping a full interior. I am going to do my best to remove as much weight from my car by going to lighter wieght stuff.

Re: Some people just like to talk
Which GTX, the Toyota Celica or VW Scirocco?
I doubt it without a turbo or nitrous. On the same token, take a foxbody LX, slap slicks and a big shot plate in it, Give it a good tune up, and you should be in the 12's pretty easily. Turbododges are pretty cheap to work on, but you gotta fight them to keep reliability up. My Daytona is about 500 bucks away from 12's (no nitrous, just turbo) and I have ~3000 invested including buying the car. Bottom line, a V8 car has way more potential than the four cylinder cars without having to dump a yearly salary under the hood. H/C/I/power adder/EEC-tuner/slicks can get you easy 11's if everything goes right with a 'Stang.

Also, you're calling his Mustang a "12 sec matchbox" yet you say below you have three Mustangs? Think you're just jealous because all you have are three V6s that you're having trouble getting into the 16s. (No offense to V6 owners in here) Quote:

Re: Some people just like to talk
Um...there isn't going to be much sex going on in the backseat of a camaro or a mustang..I'm 5'8" and 153 pounds and I can barely even sit back there comfortably. Lucky for me I'm never in the backseat.
And Matt...ever notice that huge wing on the back of a cobra R? Is that rice? :/

Re: Some people just like to talk
Haha i was only using the laid thing to make the point an all American sports car is nicer than a rice burner. Your right the only way your gettin laid in the backseat of a Stang or Camaro is if your girlfriend is a midget...no offense to small people. All that though is beside the point, Matt i figured out that the matchbox car your are talking about is a rice burner, you own a mustang, and are for mustangs lol we are all on your side.

My buddy from high school worked with a guy and built up an early 90's CRX that must have run 12's, because this thing humiliated Z06's.
When all was said and done it cost them less than $2k (Canadian $$$) to modify the car, which the dude already owned and was worth probably another grand or two. These guys were both former Honda mechanics (the CRX guy may in fact still be). They rebuilt a bigger engine from a junkyard and paid either $500 or $800 for a used turbo, and that was pretty much it - they did all the labour and tuning themselves... The car has since apparently "exploded" according to another friend. lol But just goes to show you that anyting is possible depending on how much you do yourself and who you know (for deals on parts & labour). But IMO, if your car is worth less than the MODS the other guy has spent then you had better be pretty damn fast - cause you driving one ugly and beat up piece of shit! |

Re: Some people just like to talk
yea the crx weighs like 2 pounds of course it can go pretty quick with some work on it, but good luck if you crash, that thing will crush like tin foil. and the reason the engine exploded is probly because if you put that much stress on such a tiny motor its a time bomb waitin to go off, for me id rather have my nice big 8 banger that works 1/2 less then a 4
