New hard drive question

I have a 99 Gateway computer that is a mid tower case and I'm wanting to add a second hard drive to it and this is the one i'm wanting...

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&CMP=KNC-GOOGL

Now will that work with my computer?? The hard drive in it is a 10 GB 5400RPM. I've upgraded the memory to 192 and still have another slot and i might upgrade that some more, it's fast enough for me i just need more room. If that hard drive will work how easy is it to install one??

Re: New hard drive question

usually just turn off computer, hook the IDE and power cable up, boot computer and install from CD. That's about all there is to do.

Re: New hard drive question

yeah, except for the fact that you have to select the right slave master settings, if you want to... use the cable select method on both, or master on one and slave on the other

Yeah I was gonna ask a question kind of like this. Because I would like to transfer like, my personal files I guess(music, pictures, video's, dled programs etc.) onto the new hard drive to give the factory one a little more room cuz that would make it a little bit faster right? Would it be easy to transfer the files, just like click and drag? And i'd have to change the directory for downloading songs and such?

Ok, pretty sure that this is the hard drive I'm gonna get...

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&CMP=KNC-GOOGL

Now it says that it does not include software, so do I have to buy some kind of an installation disc or something??

and...

In order to properly access the full capacity of an ATA interface hard drive or partition larger than 137GB and properly support 48-bit logical block addressing, Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 are required. This issue does not affect SCSI hard drives.

That is off the site, what exactly does that mean??

I'm also going to upgrade memory with another 256 card, and I head somewhere that anything above 512mb that the computer does not recognize it or something, anyone have any input on that?

Edit: I slid the cover off the side and the wires that go to the hard drive, like, halfway in the wire is another female connector, can't i just hook it up to that??

Re: New hard drive question

Install the new hard drives by screwing it into a blank slot. Connect the power and IDE cables. Turn your computer on and open the BIOS settings. Select your new hard drive as the primary slave drive. Save and reboot. Windows should automatically assign a drive letter to your new drive, if you want both drives to show up as one volume, you will need partitioning software.

512 is a good amount of RAM for most PCs. 192 is pretty low these days. Worth the upgrade.
