problem after changing timing belt

I recently finished changing my timing belt on my EGT 1.8L DOHC. Initially the car ran but with very very rough idle. I figured my timing is off or something, so I decided to adjust that. But next time I started the car, the idle was much rougher (ie. car about to die) and now it wont even turn over. I checked the battery with the meter and it puts out nice 12V and the horn is loud as it used to be, so I am assuming that the problem is not battery related. I am afraid that I may have damaged the engine from my timing being off. Any suggestion/help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I just recently replaced the timing belt on my 95 1.9L. I was suprised that the timing marks on the crank and camshafts weren't exactly an exact lineup when I took it off. Had I not seen how they were lined up when I took it off, it would have been easy to have been off a tooth when I put it back on. Don't know if it is characteristic or not, but any chance yours could be off a tooth?

The 1.9L actually has a notch and a white painted mark on the crank pulley. When the camshaft arrow was lined up with the dot on the head, the white paint mark was almost lined up. But the notch in the crank pulley was almost a tooth off (before the mark). I put it back on the same way, since the engine ran fine like that.

When I installed the timing belt, I remember that I was not able to align one of my cam pulleys properly to the mark on the cover. I dont know if I am supposed to force the cam pulleys to be aligned (ie. by holding the pulleys in place).
