Sorry, i had to let off a bit of steam, i really don't know why hackers do what they do, i mean, do they get there kicks out of hacking into someone elses pc and trying to do damage to it? And yes before you ask, someone has hacked into my pc and they did do some damage, i had to format my pc to sort the problem, there just sad bastards thats all.

Very very nice statement an the sad thing is its probly one of the most true statements ever. And it applies to atleast a 1/10 of the human population.

Yeah I had hackers to but my friend works for the gov and actaully gets paid to hack into gov files so they can see what to lock up and where they made errors so I call him an he sends the sender virurs that can crash entire companys networks tehehe.

But this is not always the reason. Think of computer networks IE the internet and all subnetworks that are a part of it. This is one HUGE complicated system with many variables between routing and different operating systems and just how stuff works on a packet by packet basis. It's very amazing to me and to many others. It is my job to hack. In writing, by the US military, I am required to "penetrate government systems for which I am in an administrative position to do so" and "gather information about those systems" and "research and inform local systems administrators on".... basicly how to keep their shit secure. and also "detect any unauthorized wireless networks in the vicinity of US government owned FOUO networks or any C4 systems". So I go out in a GOV (gov. owned vehicle) with my yagi antenna and use netstumbler to detect wireless networks on base. If they are in official buildings then I go inside the building and penetrate the network to verify that it is not attached to (above). I am what you call a white hat hacker. I do not simply do malicious things to computers. I simply try to keep on top of the latest technology and any "hacking" I do is prevenative and authorized (in writing, you can't just say you're authorized Given this job that I do 5 days a week and the things I've learned from it I basicly see this.

1. Script Kiddies
jackass kids that want to learn but put their energy into learning by trying to break stuff. We all broke our dads radio when we were kids right?
2. White Hat Hackers
The Good guys. They hack into your shit, don't do anything to it and they also inform you how to fix it. AKA Ethical Hackers.
3. Black Hat Hackers
The Bad guys. All of the knowledge of white hat hackers and usually more. And they intend to do harm. Usually with some small message attached or other motivation. sometimes just random.

4. Grey Hat Hackers
white hat hackers that offer you the solution if you pay them. If you don't pay them then they black hat your network.


It's like a puzzle I think. And it's a huge reward to know that something so complicated... you found and exploited a vulnerability.

Just depends on what kind of person you are when it comes to if you do good or bad. If you found a wallet on the street with a ton of cash in it and no ID at all.... would you honestly turn it into the police station?

So if you were into computer networks and you learn and read and experiment for years.... and you find something wrong. something that a thousand other people designed but missed because they could not get this "out of the box" perspective. Would you exploit it or tell the programers?

The problem with a lot of microsoft stuff is this:
People find these vulnerablities and they tell MS about them. and Microsoft doesn't do anything about them untill there is malicious logic floating around the internet that exploits it. That's dumb. And add in that their software is closed source so you can't see how it works or improve it yourself (or know how it works) .... that's why people at my skill level turn away from MS products. Some other people boycott MS also but I don't think they truly understand why.

So I feel you on the annoyance of the script kiddie. But I do have true respect for real hackers. Black or White hat. This is only because I can fathom the work it takes to do such a thing.

too bad it doesn't work like that. tehehe. If you really want to get into a debate about it I'd be more than happy. and you can explain to me exactly what your friend gives you and how it works and where he works and what he does. but i call bullshit. don't call back unless you know what you are getting yourself into. you're a good kid JCS, but don't bullshit. and you know I'm right.

Air Force. 3C051 communications computer systems craftsman. Then When I got to Japan I requested to work network security because that's what I had experience in before I joined, and I wanted to further my experience. There are a lot of moron 3C0's though

Hey thanks. I've just been fascinated with computer networking since I was 12 or 13 years old. If I didn't have other things distracting me like a wife and a life outside of work I'd honestly want to read and learn everything there is to know about computer networking. Networking is actually very simple once you get the basics down. Things start to make sense on their own and you can learn a lot easier. The only problem there is this: Once you get to this point.... yeah you start to learn a lot easier but you also begin to comprehend how much you don't know. My area is outside of the NIC (Network Interface Card).... Basicly I'm an expert on everything that happens to your data once it gets outside of your computer, hits the CAT5, goes to your cable modem or DSL modem or whatever you use to get on the internet.... goes thru a few dozen routers (but no more than 30) to get where it needs to go. thousands of trips like that across the world all happening a few hundred times just so you can pull up this stupid PHP based forum that we call automotive forums. My weakness is I have no clue how the shit works once it gets back to your network card and goes into your computer. I know it goes to a type of hardware layer, then handed to your operating systems kernel, then the OS performs a packet inspection and strips off the networking garbage.... takes the data out and sends it up to the application (IE Internet explorer) and then bam! you see these letters on the screen. But I don't know much about the inner workings (logical, not physical) of a computer beyond the basics. Networking on the otherhand.... I can visualize every step along the way... and all of the vulnerabilities in all of the systems required to make the information move..... Hard to explain i guess.... i just find it interesting so.... oh well that's enough of me babling. but yeah.... just don't write off hackers as talentless hacks (hehehe).
