Speedometer cuts out

Usually my speedometer works fine, but every now and then it will just stop reading and goes to 0. The other gauges continue to work? Any ideas??

Re: Speedometer cuts out

I am thinking it is either the gauge cluster or the speed sensor I just dont want to replace one and have it be the other. It is my girlfriends car, I am used to RWD, anybody know how difficult it is to change a speed sensor in a Neon. Is it in the tranny???

My wife's Neon does the same - not that I want to ask an obvious question, but have you tried the infamous "pound on the dash" technique to try to narrow down the source of this problem? I have done this and found that it does (temporarily) solve the problem. Most significantly, it does mean that the source of the problem is under the dash, either the instrument cluster or a back wiring connection somewhere.
