Guitar question....

Ok, Im still a noob at guitar, been playing since April and I got the chords down and all and I can play and stuff. But I got a question on how capos work, and I still have to buy one. I have Coldplay book, and on a few of the songs, it says the following:

Tuning EADEAE Capo on 2nd Fret Required

Now. Two questions. Do I leave at standard tuning and put the capo on what ever fret it tells me to, or do I tune the guitar first AND put teh capo on what ever fret it tells me to; like to I keep tuning at EADGBE and put the capo on the 2nd fret like it tells me to or do I tune to EADEAE and put the cap on?

help = appreciated. thanks.

tune first, capo second.

Basically, you could do it either way, but the capo may make it more difficult to get the proper tuning and whatnot...

Fucking hate alternately tuned songs. Although they sound cool, it's a big hassle to re-tune for ONE song, so those are the songs that I usually avoid. Couldn't resist learning Black Crowes "She Talks To Angels" though... that's a kick-ass song, really easy to play with open-E tuning, and fun to play/sing.

Good luck mang.

Edit: And now that I think about it, you would NOT want to put the capo on the 2nd fret first unless you then adjusted to tune it to FBEFBF or something like that... so tune, then capo.

Keep in mind the purpose of a capo is the change the key of a song without changing the fingering and chord shapes which can really change the sound of a song. Thus, unless you want to play along with a CD using a capo is optional. If you want to sing the song you're playing you can use the capo(or not) to find a key more suited to your vocal range. So basically if you want to play without a capo just move everything down two frets. The capo is just like moving the nut up so as to shorten your strings. Oh as to your first question, the tuning is first. You would tune your second sting down a whole step to A, then place the capo on the second fret.

Well... actually you would also want to tune the g-string down to E also.

[insert g-string joke here]
