2001 Grand Am GT ENGINE CODE
Hello,
I was wondering is anybody could help me figure what this code is. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT 2dr and the service engine soon light came on a couple days ago. I took the car to autozone for the free scan and the guy said it was reading a code 1404 which was something like auxillary emissions problem. Could somebody explain what this means and what I would need to do to fix it. I cant find out exactly what code 1404 is so if somebody knows your knowledge and help is greatly apprciated. |

Re: 2001 Grand Am GT ENGINE CODE
This is the same one that I've had over and over in my 01 GA GT. I've had it cleared like 20 times at AutoZone. The computer thinks that you're losing gas through evaporation (eg. bad seal on gas cap). Lots of times it will come on right after you get gas. In my case, I thought I actually had a bad gas cap, so I got a new one. However, the code kept reoccuring time and time again. It's apparently just a faulty sensor, and probably the same in your case.
So in other words, the computer thinks your gas is evaporating, when it's not (however I could be wrong you could actually have a bad gas cap) - So I wouldn't worry about it too much - just a sensor freaking out. |

OK, that makes sense. Thank you for your help. I'll try messing around with the gas cap.

Re: 2001 Grand Am GT ENGINE CODE
No problem - If the code still comes up with a new gas cap, I'd say 90% sure that it's just a faulty sensor and not to worry about it

Re: 2001 Grand Am GT ENGINE CODE
You may need a programming update on it, the computer does not always agree with how the evaporator tank is working.
