Master cylinder leaks by when pressed hard . Bought a new master cyl and found out you have to have a brake scan tool (release spring tension) to remove the cyl from the ABS unit. Can I take the complete unit off car and put a master cyl kit in without taking the ABS unit off? TIA Deane

Re: 1998 Lumona ABS master cylinder
You can take the whole unit off (cyl. and ABS motor assy) and swap it out for a new/rebuilt kit, or you can just take it to a shop and let them do all the work. Don't seperate the motor pack from the cylinder yourself unless you got a scan tool and know how to relieve the tension. You can put a non ABS cylinder on, however you lose ABS and your light will be on constantly, and you'll have to revert to pumping if you slip.

Thanks for the response. I wanted to know if I could take the "guts" out of the new MC and put in the old one. I can't return the new MC and the dealer will not use my part.

Re: 1998 Lumona ABS master cylinder
If you want to go through the cost & trouble, you can rebuild a MC, but I'm not totally sure that you can rebuild an ABS model without seperating the motor pack. Haynes will tell you how to do a rebuild on a cylinder.
