A few problems

First off,my sons 1998 Explorer Sport has an idle problem. We just had the timing chains replaced (1800 bucks) and that got rid of the noises we heard, but the idle problem persists.

When the engine is cold,it idles very high then goes to a very low idle, back to high, back to low,etc etc until it stalls.

Once the engine is warmed up,it idles perfectly!

Any ideas?

Also,I have changed the shocks (front and rear) yet I still get a clunking sound when I hit bumps, and the back end seems to settle after I stop. Not sure if its bushings or what, maybe a common problem? I`d get him a different vehicle, but he loves this one and its worth the money to repair,IMO.

Re: A few problems

Clean or replace Idle Air Controll valve.
Under the central engine cover
(where carburator used to be.)

Someone told me that I had to replace my IAC Valve, did that. Then I got another reply and they said to replace the Intake Manifold Gasket. Then Another person replied back stating that it may be the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). I don't know what which one it could be. My dad and I are trying to fix mine as well. If you have any luck can you respond back to what the problem may be.

I don't know how hard it maybe to replace. I've got my Haynes manual here and there are a lot of steps to remove it. But it may also depend on what type of engine you have. I have about 18 steps with my 4.0 SOHC engine.
