94 Grand Am Gt Ac Belt Problem?

Ok, heres the problem. I sometimes hear a high piched noise coming from my car and sometimes i when i turn the AC on it stops. My friend, who owns a 96 grand am, had the same problem he had it looked at and they said it was sumthin with the AC belt... i think. I am only 16 so this is my first car and i dont know whats up. so if someone could please tell me whats going on that would be greatly appreaciated. Also my neighbor has a grand am and ive heard it make the same noise. Is this common in GM vehicles????????Help!!!!!! I DONT KNOW ALOT ABOUT CARS SO IF U COULD MAYBE TELL ME WHATS GOING ON WITH OUT USING CONFUSING TERMS OR WHATEVER THAT WOULD BE GREAT !
