big blocks in 3rd gens ???

i saw a 88 formula firebird today that had a 455 SD in it, the engine was so tight in under the hood that i could barely get my hand between the side of the engine and the fender well. he said that the engine was built to run. at idle the car was rocking from side to side, and the sound from it was plum sick! also he is running a 100 shot of nos. id say that this firebird wont last long, the frame will either be warped from the power or it will be totalled in an accident. i watching him take off in it and he could barely hold it. also to get the hood to close he had to cut a square out of the hood so it would close down around the air cleaner

Re: big blocks in 3rd gens ???

I got mine for 395. that kat justlearning is going to buy it thoug , I've decided to go with something else. the ram air style hood. I think I will make a way o come off my ram intake tube right into the hoods inlet.Throw a filter somewhere inbetween and call it good. Right now , I am running out of bay room for anything else so I am stuck on short ram intake -_- too much conflict for true CAI. Hope he gets it worked out.

Re: big blocks in 3rd gens ???

Think thats crazy, have you seen someone stuff an 454 in an S10? that is insane. That SD455 would be awsome in a car, he put in alot of hours to get that thing to be right, or atleast his mechanic did...

Theres links on that site to the guys 427bb powered camaro. If you look around you'll see he has a list of modifications he had to make to get it stuffed in there.

Ive seen 496 stroker motors in S-10s and blown 454's in street legal 3rd gens. Anything can be done, just takes money.

as for that air cleaner to the cowl. ive seen circle track racers use a regular air cleaner and rivet sheets of alumunum to keep the heat out and follow the conformity of the cowl . it closes out the engine compartment and is open on the top is the best discription. jegs makes a carbon fiber one not sure if its for a cowl as much as a rear engine scoop style but no accomidations for filters.

I would seriously doubt that it was a REAL 455 SD. Those engines were so rare that the Poncho lovers have accounted for each and every one of them.

Re: big blocks in 3rd gens ???

the only thing i dont understand about putting a 402,427,or 454 big block into a car equipped with a small block, seeing as you can get affordable crate small blocks of equil size. that bolt right in, no mods nessesary, short of subframe connectors so you dont break the car in half.

Re: big blocks in 3rd gens ???

yeah i appreciate the thought about the air cleaner to cowl but i need to be able to put my 14*3 filter in there and ive seen the ones they have in summit but as you said to room for a filter....
i figured id have to try and have someone fab one up since i have no welder or metal skills, but ill have to get a lager ring or tb spacer cause as of now i had to put a small piece of cardboard on the back of my air cleaner cause it sort of touches one plug wire so i deff. have no room as of now to add a metal plate under it if u get what im sayin
