problem with 96 civic
hey guys, i know some basic about cars but this problem is way out of my league, i cant troubleshoot why the car is doing that.
when i start the car, the car starts fine, and it drives fine from low speed to upper speed, but when i decellerate and come to a stop, the car stall and shuts down, the battery light comes on and the oil light comes on too. so i change the battery, change the oil, oil filter, but it still does that and the engine check light is now on. anyone has any idea of what it could be? thanks for your help. |

Make sure your gas cap is on tightly- a leak in the system can cause the engine to stall. the cap should click 3 times at least after you put it back on. Also, see if it's thrown a code (The check engine light would be on). A bad oxygen sensor can do this, and it should throw a code.
The battery and oil lights come on standard when the ignition is on but the car is not running- look the next time you start the car, move the ignition to "on" but don't crank it. You should see the check engine light, the oil and battery lights, and i believe one other amber light come on and then turn off.

:? like its a horrible thing if he drives an automatic.how is the idle? my car did that before just because it would idle in the LOW 100's, id have to give it gas just to keep it from stalling. if it does idle really low its just as easy to fix as adjusting the little screw on your TB

Re: problem with 96 civic
Doers it happen when the car is cold or hot? What everybody else said, isn't gonna fix the problem. I would try adjsuting the idle screw located on top of the TB. Bump it up about 2 maybe 3 turns and try test driving it.

Re: problem with 96 civic
I had the same problem with my 97 LX. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor and the problem went away. I would try that. Its cheap and easy to do.
