A/T Shifting problems

My wife's 99 Beetle Gls keeps poping in and out of gear. Mostly in reverse and 1st gear. At cruising speed it has no problem. If I put my foot on the brake and gently press the gas I can feel it engage and disengage. I tried to reset the trany and that didn't help. It has 56,000 miles. Any help would be great.
Thanks

What do you mean by "poppin in and out of gear"?

Does the lever do it or does the tranny do it?

Re: A/T Shifting problems

Its the tranny not the lever. When we put the car into Drive, it starts to go then slips into neutral, then goes again. But not all the time. It does in reverse too, when backing out of the drive way. It doesn't seem to be slipping, its more instant.

Re: A/T Shifting problems

You can check it for codes, but it sounds like an internal trans problem to me. How's the fluid level? Checking the level is an ordeal in itself. I can try to help you through it if you're mechanically inclined.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to get it checked for codes.

Sounds like it could be an adjustment in the shifter cable... I haven't had one of these apart so I don't know how they're set up, but that used to be a typical GM problem in Front wheel drive cars...
