DO NOT FLAME ON THIS TOPIC!!!!!!
I have been searching everything possbile to find the answer and cant find it. If you know where it is please just put the link in this thread. Now i have heard the redtop and blacktop are pretty much the same is s13 (im not concerning any other models) untill last night, some guy was arguing that the blacktop can hold more, and the redtop after being pushed hard for an amount of time "melts down" or starts its way to the junkyard. Now i dont understand that seeing the compression is the same. So i was wondering if anyone knows the answer or truth about this, what exactly is different from inside out between the blacktop/redtop s13. Oh and please leave out the KA-T i know once you rebuild, and turbo the KA its a nice motor and stong, but thats not what im asking.

Re: redtop verse blacktop
there is no blacktop for S13s, only available on the late S14 n the S15 models. . .I think the only diff is the turbo from T25 (redtop) to T28 (black). . .the later blacktops also had the "notch top" which the valve cover would slightly curve towards the firewall, till now i dunno wtf that shit does or what its for lol

Re: redtop verse blacktop
and the s14 and s15 used ball bearing turbos.. and lazyfcker, you're still a newb at heart. if you had any common sence you'd search the automotive forums for threads cause there are a ton of them. and you can't say "don't flame me" cause its something discussed all the time. go back and read the endless threads and then come back here and tell us all. you're probably the 5th person to ask this in the last few months so what does that tell you?? there are lots of threads on it and its a really annoying question.

2.) [S13 - T25] [S14-T28] [S15-T28BB] 3.) The Hump tops have a Low Port head to make room for the VVT stuff hence why most people use S13 Black Tops for over 600HP 4.) The S13 Black Top can support the most power because its got the highport head with slightly larger ports than the red top. it can be distingushed by casting lines below the cam seals and the ECU code (62 I think) CLIFF NOTES: S13 Black Top > all other SR |

Re: redtop verse blacktop
I would go for the s13 sr20. But if you think about it, s14 has a t28 turbo which costs like say $800ish so if an s14 sr is only say 700 dollars more expensive then you actually don't lose any money on it if you are going to do a t28 swap. But I would rather get an s13 sr and just get the turbo from a s15 off Ebay.
And to see if the motor is black top (s13) and not a red top painted or replaced valve cover, it has little vertical lines on front of the engine right under the valve cover. agree S13 black top > all sr20det s

dispite what alot of people may think there are black S13s
the S13 red top and black top are the same things for pretty much everything important, i think the turbo was different the thing that confuses everybody is that S14s are also refered to as blacktops this is exactly why i like the term notchtop the S15 is almost always just called the S15, it is the most power stock SR motor, comes with a T28 ballbearing turbo and variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust sides[well to my knowledge] |

Re: redtop verse blacktop
One of my freinds was trying to convince me that there was a Blue Top. When I asked him he showed me the Tomei Genesis crate motor. I said "yeah, heres one of the rare Pink Tops." (yashio) he says "no dude thats just painted."

Re: redtop verse blacktop
Damn this question has been asked and answered a million and 1 time.
S13-Red and black top, no varialble valve timing, flat valve cover. T25 turbo no ball bearing, 370cc injectors, 205hp. S14- Only black top with a hump on the back of the valve cover. T28 turbo ball bearing, variable valve timing on the intake side only, 370cc injectors, 220hp. S15-Black top only with a similar valve cover to the S14 (has a hump). T28 dual ball bearing turbo, variable valve timing on both of the cams (exhaust and intake). Has 444cc injectors and produces 250hp. Weakness is in the tranny, 6 speed (unlike all others) and tend to break during hard drifting/racing. But there are drifters using it with out problems. Personally I want a S13 black top, it is newer then the red top but still has the same design. And most people who tune the engine don't use the vvt anyway, so why pay more for it? SR20DET vvt motors have a plus of T28 turbo but you can get them relativle cheap on ebay.
