I would like to make one thing clear for all of the "newer" car crowd.

Higher octane does NOT mean more power.
Octane refers to the temperature and compression at which the gasoline and oxygen detonate. Higher octane = takes more to detonate. That's all.

OK.... as I read thread after thread in other areas of the forum, I noticed many guys/girls saying that thier 1/4 times could have been even faster if they would have used some sort of octane booster. Or They wish they would have used high octane gas on their dynos...

I simply joined the forum to sell a nice pair of tires I no longer need. Then I looked around the forum for a bit, noticed the octane thing in MANY places, and wanted to help out the "newer" crowd. OBVIOUSLY, yes the topic has come up before. Again, congrats. But I still see and hear guys refering to getting more power out of higher octane. I'm am trying to help these people. You... you need the type of help I am unable to supply. I do have a friend that is into psychiatry though...

Us "kids" have discussed this over and over. and if you have been in theis form for more than 5 seconds you would have known that that has been said over and over. People get tired of seeing the same subjects cluttering up the place and masking the truely important threads.
Also, FYI, higher octane fules often do have a greater energy stored. but not enough to gain even a single HP in most cases. the type of octane boosters you pour into your tank would do nothing to increase stored energy, however. they are simply flameable inhibitors. anyone with half a year of chemistry experence would know this.

so stay off the old topics and dont use the "my penis is bigger than yours because im old and have been building motors since before you where born" deal.

Well thank you. But we already got a new block and had it stroked to 383 then put Electronic Multiport Fule injection on it instead of messing around with an old carburated engine handleing turbocharging.

True, Octane booster doesn't increase power. The only reason they might make it feel like you've got more power is because like you said, they are "flameablility inhibitors" - They prolonged the combustion process of each stroke. This is turn reduces your engine's tendancy to detonate / knock. When your engine detects knock, it cuts timing which kills HP. By running higher octane, your engine will be running smoother w/ less knock = engine won't cut timing cause there will be less knock = no robbed HP.

So overall, octane booster doesn't add HP, it merely stops your computer from stealing it by allowing it to run at optimum timing.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone here or nothin, just thought I'd add my 2 cents as long as you guys were on the topic

Only in some cases will increased octane prevent an ECU from robbing the engine of power. The car must first be pinging and second must be equipped with a knock sensor.

BTW, octane is simply a measure of the fuel's ability to resist auto-ignition. It is not linked with how long the fuel takes to burn. Nor does how long it takes for the fuel to burn have anything to do with reducing knock.

Read the Gasoline FAQ for more information and for advanced credit, read a textbook on internal combustion engines such as "The Internal-Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice" by Charles Fayette Taylor.

While you are correct that running a higher octane will not give you more power, the fact of the matter is that a higher octane will mean that you are less likely to get detonation. This will allow you to run more advanced timing or perhaps more boost thus allowing for power gains. For instance, the SRT-4 has a nifty little upgrade on the stage 2 kit where the ECU has more than one map. One for pump gas and one for higher octane. Put in some 110 octane and flip the switch and you will see more power.

That could be the type of thing that some of these so called kids were talking about.

AS far as octane booster go, they don't even raise your octane level a full point. They are snake oil and are only there to make you waste your money. There are mixtures you can use to raise your octane level, but you can't buy them at Checker Auto or Wal Mart.

I understand that you're just trying to inform people but you are going about it all the wrong way. You preach to CB not to insult people yet you are doing just that. All I can tell you is to knock off the attitude or you might not be around here too much longer.
