reverse lights stuck

I have a 1998 4 door escort with a five speed tranny. My problem is just in the last few days, I've realized that my reverse lights are on all the time and won't turn off. I don't know if there is a sensor under the shifter boot that needs to be replaced or what, so if anyone may have a suggestion, I would greatly appreciate it.

The backup light switch is in the transmission itself. It is in the front of the tranny on the right hand side(Looking at the engine from the front). Down close to the bottom. It has an electrical connector you can disconnect to replace it. If you don't care abut backup lights you could take the bulbs out by accessing from inside of the trunk. I think you will have to remove an inside panel to get to them.
