96 base model transmission problems
First, my dad's 1996 base model Lumina had its engine rebuilt (after it blew up while idling) at 180,000km. Now, the transmission won't engage in overdrive OR reverse. In drive, it won't exceed 50km/h. Can anybody please help?

Re: 96 base model transmission problems
Hate to say this, but it sounds like new transmission time. Sorry. There IS the proper amount of fluid, right?

Re: 96 base model transmission problems
I'm not sure where you live, but it costs around $2200 CAD to rebuild a Lumina tranny. Probably close to $3500 CAD to replace it with a new one.

Same thing happened to my car ... mine blew at 168,000 miles with extremly rough dricing. The tranny more then likly blew the core, the weak part of the tranny and prolyl tore it all up. Cost me 1200 for a rebuild ... replacing two parts and bunch of hours. I would say if you got the tools swap the tranny for a new one OR sell that car for what its worth and buy a new car.

The guy who is actually doing my PCS as we speak gave me roughly the same figure. He's a brother of a guy I work with so I don't think it's in his best interest to swindle me. Mind you, this is based on what he charged a guy he didn't know, who's son decided to do burnouts in his Grand Prix and completely destroyed the entire tranny. A fully remanufactured 4T65E costs about $1200 CAD from an actual rebuilder + Installation + taxes. That's at least $2000 in Ontario. I'm guessing that having the tranny shop do everything themselves would cost a little bit more. Am I missing something here? |
