I recently bought a 2004 Venture and found that it makes a very annoying high pitched whine from under the hood when traveling at about 65 mph. It almost sounds like a bad bearing on a small fan or motor. I'm certain that it is from some kind of wind vibration because I've heard it while driving into the wind at about 30 mph and have heard it go away while turning with the wind at 70. It's not the wipers. I have a tight schedule and don't want to have to take it in to the dealer if I don't have to. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same problem and have not been able to find out where it is coming from. I put tape on the windshield, on the window seals and even on the plastic where the air intakes are. I thought it solved it, and was going to start removing tape until I heard it again. Before I could take any tape off it happened again. It seems to only happen when there is a strong crosswind. I also noticed that it seems to stop if I roll down the driver window when I hear it. So I am thinking that maybe its an issue with the door seals. The van is still under warranty, but I dont have another car and cant afford to leave it at the dealer for a week while they try to re-produce the problem. I hope others have heard of this problem and know if there is a solution, that would help with the dealer since I can then just tell them what needs to be fixed. I will continue trying to determine which seal is vibrating in the wind and causing this horrible whine.

Re: 2004 Venture wind vibration sound from under the hood.
Pusa, are you absolutely sure it's a wind noise? Mine made an annoying very high pitched--low volume whine when the front right wheel hub/bearing assembly started to wear out. I was able to rule out an engine noise by shifting into neutral at highway speed to let the engine run at idle speed, which did not change the noise. Turning the wheel did affect the noise, however, as did travelling at different speeds (It only made the noise at speeds over 50). Dealer part price for a new hub was over $300, not including labor. I bought a new aftermarket hub for $100 and replaced it myself in about an hour.

Noise
My car has only 6k miles so I would hope it's not a worn part. Since the noise happens at a variety of speeds, depending on the wind speed and direction, the only seeming common thread would be the speed of the wind across the hood or through the engine compartment. I don't have a garage to work in and Chicago is somewhat cold and inhospitable at this time of year, so it may be weeks or months until I am able to put any real time into solving this. The noise seems to eminate from somewhere in the center of the engine compartment just on the other side of the firewall. I haven't tried tape but I thought I would by starting with the insulation on the inside of the hood. I'll also have to check where the hood seals in front of the windshield. I'll keep you posted in case I solve this myself. If anyone comes up with anything before then it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! |

I have a 2004 Venture that my company has me use for service calls and I have the same noise that all of you have from under the hood at about 60 miles an hour. It gets even worse in a cross wind. Have been to the dealer twice and they cannot find the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is company leased van so I am not allowed to do anything to try to resolve the problem. Now the dealer wants me to bring it in again so the service manager can try to hear the problem but I don't have the time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 2004 Venture wind vibration sound from under the hood.
After talking about this with some others, the noise shows up on other chevy cars and pontiacs. There is a thought that it could be coming from the internal air filter. His car does it at ~75 mph, my van does it at ~65 mph with a high crosswind. We are thinking that the air is getting forced into the filter too hard and causing a kazoo effect on the filter. I am going to try removing the interior filter next time I hear this happen. I have not yet taken it to the dealer since its very hard to re-produce. If there is not a crosswind, it doesnt do it.

Re: Re: 2004 Venture wind vibration sound from under the hood.
My venture is dong the same thing! The whistling noise sounds like it is coming from the driver's side windshield area maybe around head high area! I've seen a few replys about the crosswinds etc... I noticed when it's very windy out it can be pretty bad. This noise is so annoying!! But I would have to agree about the windshield seal or door seals, I don't think it is coming from the engine. Please help if anyone knows anymore.

Steady as she BLOWS!!
What a surprise , yet another COMMON problem with the venture. If you guys and gals still have warranty, take it in and get a "replacement" vehicle untill they solve the problem. Good luck to you. Kevin |

I have a 2004 Venture with the same problem--I think. I've had it to the dealer 4 times so far. I can get the noise to stop when the windshield wiper is at the 12 o'clock position. It stops and then starts when it leaves the 12 o'clock position. However when I use the washer it goes away for a long time. I'm taking it back to the dealer next week.

Re: 2004 Venture wind vibration sound from under the hood.
What has the dealer done for you at thig point? I have replaced the seals that hold the windshield in? I will finally get mine back into tht edealer this week, I was going to request that they just replace the seal. I also had the venture just stall at a light. Was rather odd, it has never done that before and it started right up. I was really wondering what they have done so far for your venture so I can tell them that it probably wont work.

Re: Re: 2004 Venture wind vibration sound from under the hood.
They had a glass company check the seal out--nothing happened. After the 3rd trip to the dealer, they said ther found a bulliten taht said the problem was the seal between the firewall and the passinger area. They did some kind of seal job and it reduced the noise but it was still there aand it has increased. When my Wiper is at the 12 o;clock position it stops. When I use the washer it stopps for quite a while, so I think it is either something to do with the wiper/ washer or the seal on the left side of the windshield or door. Good luck.

Cool. Yeah let me know how it goes, then I will take the info to my dealer. Has your venture ever just stalled at a stop?
