code 54 - or camshaft sensor/distributor timi

This is on an 88 Caravan 3.0 v6. It stalls and sometimes idles fast. The computer code read out: 54 Internal logic module fault ('84 turbo only) - or camshaft sensor/distributor timing (7)

I don't have a turbo, so does this mean the distributor pick up is bad or is there a camshaft sensor and where?

The note 7 says the distributor pick up is bad?

The 3.0 has an optical pickup in the distributor that can go erratic and cause this type of problem. They are easy enough to change once you get the cap off. Easier if you bring the engine to tdc #1 and carfulely remove the distributor. To put it back in just align the punch marks on the end gear and carefully push it in. Make alignment marks on the rotor first though to avoid any possible confusion and to get the timing bang on again.
