Alfa 156 ABS problems

Dear Friends,

I need your help with my Alfa 156. This is the specifications of my Alfa that is having problems; Alfa 156;2500cc, 6 speed manual, 24v, 1998, 4 door car. The car has done 98,000 km.

A week ago, two warning lights lit up on my Alfa; "ABS System is inefficient" and "Low brake fluid level". In addition, the speedometer and the trip meter stopped working. When I start the car in the morning, the warning lights are not activated. However, after I drive the car for 2-3 min, the speedometer stops working and the above warning lights come on.

The Alfa dealer told me that I have to replace the following control unit: ABS ECU control unit (Alfa part # 71716867?). This unit controls the ABS break system etc. However, the cost of this unit is over US$ 2,300.

Questions;
1. Do I have to replace this unit?
2. Can I get this unit in Europe at a cost less than what my Alfa dealer wants?
3. Is it safe to buy the unit from an Alfa breaker/junk yard?

I know I am asking a lot of questions. Please advise me.

Thanks
Alfa 156
