tapping noise from camshaft
hey all,
i have a mk3 golf the cam belt recentley went and has been replaced.... the engine starts but there is still no oil reaching the top of the engine..... could this be making the tapping sound or is that due to something else??? Also what things should i check to work out why no oil is reaching the top (camshaft area)??? regards |

Did the belt break while the engine was running? Officially the 2.0 is an interference engine (valves hit the piston when the belt breaks). If so, I'd start with a compression test.

hey boschmann i have read a lot of the replies to peoples quiries and have noticed that you are the dude.......
yer the belt did break and have checked the vavles and the are ok...( thank god...) i ave a safe engine... i think that went cos the oil wasnt reaching the top.... it has been surggested that there may be a blockage somewhere...hmmm i currently have the sump off to look at the pump... thepump filter was not too clogged (did not look glogged enough to stop oil from passing) the chain is still ok and so are the cogs ( will have to use a feeler gauge) look ok though... someone also suggested the oil pressure vavle may have got stuck.... but i can not locate this ti check..... i am tempted to put the sump back on and and new oil filter and just give it ago. what does the dude think.... if anything...... p.s cheers for the reply...... oh and the engine is onlyy a 1.4 engine model AEX |

Well, we didn't get that engine in the US. Did you lose oil pressure then the belt broke? How did you check the valves, was the head taken off? It should have an OP sensor in the head where you can check the pressure with a gauge.

the oil warninng came on when i started the engine up and then it went out and then it came back on.... ( what a fool i am) the head has not been taken off completely just the rocker cover... the valves where checked with a compression test from the spark plug area...

If the cam siezed enough to break the T-belt I'd pull a few of the cam caps, particularly the one at the belt end. You also need to check into that oil pressure problem. It's possible the 1.3 isn't an interference engine, but watch out for oil starvation damage.

the oil pressure is ok now (yey) i have oil reaching the top. what sort of damage could be done from lack of oil??? the cam shaft was a little bit scratched.....

I'd pull the cam journal caps & se how bad the scoring is. If it's badly scored then you can have oil pressure issues.
