Grinding Gear

I have a '91 Integra LS. I don't know why, but for some reason anytime I shift into 5th gear it always grinds. I push in the clutch all the way, I even have tried keeping it held in longer b4 i shift. But it still grinds when I go to put it in gear. Anyone know why it would be doing this???

Most deff the synchro, when you are going to 5th are you in a high rpm or normal driving?

Re: Grinding Gear

synchros synchronize the speeds of interlocking teeth within the transmission. A bad synchro does a bad job of synchronizing speeds lol. That is without getting into detail. It is not a cheap fix. A rebuilt 91 LS tranny w/ install would prolly cost about 6-700 bones.

Re: Grinding Gear

yea, that aint no joke, i just remembered something...if i shift without my clutch, i can usually hit it just right on 5th, myabe i just aint shifting fast enough, but still, it shouldn't grind like that

Re: Grinding Gear

You don't need a new tranny...some shops will tell you that to make more money off you (dealerships definantly will).

Synchros only cost a hundred or so bucks each. I know kormex sells individual synchros for my 3000gt. Then you just gotta find a local shop that will install them. (some wont because they can't warranty such work, so they only will replace the entire tranny). But a good local shop should be able to do it for you.

I am surprised to hear that it is in such a high gear though...typically you see 2nd or 3rd go out first.

Re: Grinding Gear

check out salvage yards, you can probably pick up a used tranny for next to nothing if you look around, only thing have to worry about though is if it's any in better shape than the one you already have.

Re: Grinding Gear

ya ur right. its cheap. $100 for synchro? labor is definitely cheap. so is taking apart the tranny. its not specialized labor. cheap cheap cheap!!!! picking up a used tranny is a horrible idea, rebuilt is the only way to go. hondas arent known for the highest quality trannies
