1986 z24 problems with 4 wheel drive

Have a 1986 z24 pickup with around 95k miles that I have owned for a few months.

the 4 wheel drive will not engage, the light comes on but I have no power to the front wheels in either 4H or 4L.

Just figured it out tonight when I tried to get out of my driveway and got stuck in the snow. I kind of suspected something was wrong a few weeks ago, but never really followed up on it.

wondering if it a vacuum problem or maybe something more serious.

any ideas of what to start with first ?

I don't really have an answer for you and unfortunately this section of the Nissan board doesn't really get much traffic. You might try going to a different section like the Toyota boards and seeing if anyone there has had a similar problem. The technology probably isn't that different.

I forgot to mention that there are automatic locking hubs. you may have already figured that out, but just in case
