1991 cavalier will not start

I have a 91 cavalier that will not start. When you turn the key nothing, no sounds nothing. I have replaced the battery with a new battery. The battery and starter grounds seem ok. The fusible link on the battery seems ok. This is the first starting problem I have had with the car. When the key is not in the ignition the door chimes will go off when the door is opened. Could I have a bad ignition switch? Is this hard to fix? Does it cost a lot to fix? What do I have to do to trouble shoot this problem? Please I need help!

Re: 1991 cavalier will not start

You describe a bad ignitions switch. It is kinda hard to change. Before you go and change it test for voltage at the starter solenoid when you turn the key. The starter wires could be on backwards (probably not).

If the starter solenoid is not getting voltage when you turn the key then it is your switch.

To change:

1: disconnect battery.
2. loosen the two bolts that support the steering column. You will need to remove the dash panel cover under the column (the one with the a/c vent)
3. once the column drops you will see the switch on top of the column. it is a tight squeeze to get in there and unbolt.
4. be careful of the dimmer switch rod. it will fall out if not taped or held.

5. if it comes out you need to go down through the column to reinsert it. this requires a special tool to release a spring behind the star washer. this spring WILL break your nose if you do not use the tool. Good Luck.

How much do you think this would cost to repair?

I believe the book is about $200 parts and labor. But I am guessing at the labor rate in your area.
