Exclamation 99 Yukon having trouble starting

I have a 99 Yukon and it won't start. When you turn the key on to crank it the lights come on and the dash lights come on but when you turn it all the way to engage the starter the lights go out and it clicks once. Is the lights going out when you turn it all the way a common symtom? I put a new battery in it and that didn't help. I cleaned the cables and everything.

My guess would be a bad connection between the battery and starter. If it is drawing a huge amount of current that causes the lights to go down, that would be a bad starter. The bad connection probably would be at the starter.

I second the 1st post Starter or loose connection.
Does your wire feel or get hot in anyway, and have you had any problems before hand such as no oil issue or anything like that (which i doubt)

Where is the starter located? I tried to look today but I could not get under my vehicle good due to side steps.

Re: 99 Yukon having trouble starting

You couldn't slide under vehicle? I can slide under mines fairly easy, but its on the passenger side if i remember correctly and man oh man it looks simple to remove compared to my German vehicles i work on. If not sure what it looks like goto ebay put in yukon starter and see exactly what it looks like then go under vehicle you will see it. or goto a local autostore purchase manual and you will be on ya way in the 1st step Chilton manual

When you find the starter.....before you tighten anything, disconnect the battery! Even if it is a new battery, it's a good time to thoroughly clean the terminals and all connections to the starter. A steel wrench going from the positive terminal of a fully charged battery to the car frame (ground) is an arc you won't forget for a while.

The starter is on the right side of the block towards the rear. You really need to get a Shop manual. Take Heed from the earlier post and disconnect the battery,
