Ammeter or voltmeter? To my understanding, an Ammeter hooks up to the alternator I believe... So it can tell you if it's over or under charging your battery measured in amperes. Voltmeters are good because they don't have as big of an electrical connection that has to come into the car, and are therefor safer. An ammeter is like having a mechanical oil temp/pressure guage in the sense that the oil (or direct battery) line has to go into the passenger cabin. But anyways, it should hook up to the alternator as far as I know, I'm not sure where to it exactly though.
