Help --'95 Wrangler 5spd Won't Go Into Gear

I desperately need some help!!-- we had to have my husband's 1995 Jeep Wrangler towed home from about 60 miles away last night. The Jeep had started "popping" out of gear a few weeks ago, yesterday it popped out and would not go back in to gear(it's a 5 speed) -- does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong? He wants to try repairing the Jeep himself as money is really tight right now, and we've already sunk about $3200.00 into the Jeep since we bought it in 1997. Thanks so much to anyone who might could help us out!!!!!

Re: Help --'95 Wrangler 5spd Won't Go Into Gear

I have had a problem similer to this. What fixed it for me was the clutch slave and clutch master cylinder. When I had the problem though it was still drivable it just took a whole lot to put it in gear. And if you put it in gear before you start it, you can still shift from 1st to 2nd ect. without a problem. The clutch slave and master cylinder was something like $280, but this was on an Isuzu Rodeo. Not sure if that is the problem though. Does it go into gear while the car is shut off???

Thank you so very much for your reply!!-- I don't believe it will
go into gear at all, even without it running. He was on his way to work yesterday, when he said he heard a very loud "ping" and I assume it must have jumped out of gear at that time and he wasn't able to get it back in. He coasted to the side of the road and had to leave it there until we could find someone to tow it home. -- again, I really appreciate your help!!!

Re: Help --'95 Wrangler 5spd Won't Go Into Gear

i have seen 5th gear actually crack and cause it to be unable to be shifted.that might explain the loud noise.but if it was popping out of gear, that is typically a sign of bad synchros.

Re: Help --'95 Wrangler 5spd Won't Go Into Gear

I hope for your sake it's not the transmission. The rodeo that I had, jumped out of gear occasionally even after replacing the clutch slave and master cylinder. Clutch parts are cheap and relatively easy to install unless it be the clutch itself, but even that doesn't cost a WHOLE lot to have it installed. But if your transmission is shot it'll set you back probably $1000+. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck with it, I hope it all works out for you.

Thank you both so much for taking the time to try to help out!!!-- My husband is a police officer in a county about 60 miles away and won't have a day off until Wed. to try to take a look at the Jeep. I've told him about your replies and believe me, any suggestions that you've given have been a tremendous help, it gives us a starting place and hope that the problem hopefully will be something "small"!! Thanks again!!

Re: Help --'95 Wrangler 5spd Won't Go Into Gear

One Quick Question, Does The Stick Move At All While In Neutral? If The Actual Stick Is Stuck, It Would Indicate Broken Shift Fork. 94 Wrangler Did That, I Bought A Rebuilt For $400, Replaced Tranny In Driveway.

Thank you all so much, we did wind up having the Jeep towed once more to a repair shop, where it is still sitting as they have told us that the transmission needs to be re-built at a price tag of $1500.00!! I don't remember all the details as I got them second hand from my husband, but I do know that they told him that 5th gear was totally gone. --- Not sure what we're going to do at this point, but I do appreciate everyone's help and time!!!

Probably cheaper to get a replacement at the junkyard, but with a rebuild you won't have to worry about it ever.
