My present 04 Ford F-150 has the 3.55 rear end in it. and I found a real nice 05 Ram 4x4 hemi truck with just the options i was looking for. I noticed this truck it had the same rear end as the ford 3.55, but others on the lot had the 3.92. but also had a lot more options and were out of my price range. I asked a friend who has a similar truck with the 3.55 and he said he wasnt real sure about the difference between them but that his towed a small 5th wheel just fine. I just wanted to get the feedback of others also. Ill be towing a small 24ft travel trailer and in the future maybe a small 5th wheel. but one other question... when i got there the truck haddent been started for a few days, when i started it there was a slight knock for about 3-5 seconds then went away. i let the truck run for about 5 minutes and shut it off. let it sit about 20 min maybe 3o and started it this time no knock. Had a 02 silverado with piston slap and am very cautious . Hope this isnt the first sign of piston slap Last edited by Suprteck; 12-26-2004 at 01:16 PM. |

Go with the 3.92. If you are ever going to anything you will wish you had them. You wont notice millege much at all. Ive had 3.55, 3.73, and now i have 4.10 in my 01. Dad has 3.92 and they pull good. The 3.55 was weak.

Definitely get the 3.92 if you'll be towing alot.
And a little noise at startup after sitting for a long time is normal; all the oil has dripped down into the pan, and it takes awhile for it ALL to get down there.

Ill be towing the 24 ft lite travel trailer only about twice a year and moderate distances. The 5th wheel is just a dream right now that might not ever happen. what would the gas mileage difference be between the 2 on daily driving. I was figuring that since i would only tow a lite trailer a couple times a yr that the 3.55 would be better because 95% of my driving would be commute. |

Re: please give advice on rear ends 3.92 or 3.55 ?????
Theoretically the 3.55 will get better mileage since the engine is turning slower. If you're only towing every once and awhile, maybe the 3.55 is better for you.. I think you'll feel the difference in power under all conditions, so the choice is up to you.
As far as mileage, I talked to a guy that had a 2500 automatic HEMI with 4.11 gears, and he got about 17 on the highway. I've got a 3.7 Liter 5 speed with 3.92 and get almost 18 highway (still going up, only 4k miles).
