93 Grand Am has problem accelerating after startup

I came across this forum as I was searching for others with a similar problem but did not find anything. Anyways...

I recently took my 93 Grand AM into my mechanic for a problem I was having with my "Check Gauges" light. It would come on intermittently and had been doing so for a very long time. I put off taking it in for a while, but recently the "Service Engine Soon" and "Check Oil" lights came on and off. Oil level and color semed fine, and my car drove fine, but I took it in this time.

I explained the problem to my mechanic and when I got my car back he told me he pulled the following codes:
27 2nd gear switch or circuit problem
26 quad driver module failure
39 torque converter clutch malfunction

I also got an oil change and transmission service. He said the problems I had might have been transmission related and to drive around for a few days and see if my problem cleared up.

When I left the mechanic, my car had problems accelerating right after I started the engine. It can get up to about 15mph but would run very rough and cannot get past this speed for a short time, although I am constantly on the gas. It feels like it wants to die on me. After a while it seems to clear up and I can accelerate normally.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to get all the information in. Thanks for any help or advice.

Re: 93 Grand Am has problem accelerating after startup

Is the engine revving or is it having a hard time getting the rpm's up. If that is the case then check the cat. It sounds like the cat may be blocked, this would cause the car not to want to accelerate. It could also have to do with the fuel pressure. If the car isn't getting enough fuel then the car will not accelerate either. Just a couple of items to check.

Re: 93 Grand Am has problem accelerating after startup

Thanks for the reply GTP Dad. I've had the problem occur a couple times over the past few days, and the RPMs hit about 1500 and get stuck there while I keep my foot on the gas. It stays like that for anywhere from a couple seconds to 15 or so was the longest I've experienced. Are those 2 items things I can check myself? I have virtually 0 experience in dealing with cars and have always been a bit hesitant to learn, although now might be a good time for me to start.
