2002 impala

I just recently bought a used 2002 impala 3.4L with 45,000 miles. I just got done checking the gas mileage. Intown I am getting 13 mpg; Highway I get 26 mpg. I know this not correct. It should be more like 32 highway/ 22 intown.I am not a leadfoot, nor is there heavy traffic. Does anyone have any suggestion on what the problem is?

Re: 2002 impala

Are you getting this info from the display, if you have it, or are you actually calculating after you fill up. The display is inaccurate most of the time...i almost wonder why they put it in.

let me know...

yeah same here dont go by what that display says. you can hit low enough gas that it says low fuel and if you look its normally for ma and my friend like 12.6 or something used gallons with a 17 gallon tank, but when you fill up its like 14 or 15. so calculate your milage. but we also have the 3.8 so it might be a little different for the 3.4

No, I checked it with calculator. I have no display. I can tell is is sucking gas. But it runs good, no gas smells or anything. I would like to believe it a feul filter, spark plugs, or air filter. But I don't think it would throw it off that much.

Re: 2002 impala

Well, mine i have been getting 22mpg on the highway. I've put new air filter, plugs and all that stuff in it. I'm going to crawl underneath it today and see if there is an o2 sensor after the converter but i don't think there is. I would recommend the o2 sensor or have it check. Mine has 80,000 on it and I'm assuming it's probably that. Also, check under the hood and really sniff around and see if your fuel pressure regulator is leaking. If you smell gas i would get it replaced because mine was replaced because it was leaking.

Re: Re: 2002 impala

actually the window stickers said for mine which is a v6 20 for city and 30 for highway. I think the 4 cyl was 22 and 32. for 23 and 33. but you could do an air filter like you said, not that much money, and maybe buy some injector cleaner at an auto parts store and throw that in your gas tank next fill up, altho your injectors really shouldnt be that dirty with only 45,000 miles. fuel filter shouldnt need replaceing, but it wouldnt hurt not that expensive, plugs are cheap too. but tell you what, check your tire pressure. you would be suprised on how much that will affect your cars performance.
