astro van not starting

I have a 93 Astro van not starting. The ignition module, in the distributor, was just replaced & the module looked like it smoked right after I hooked up the battery cable & turned on the key. I'm not sure if the coil would have did that or the distributor or what. The module has 3 connectors: 1 to the distributor pickup, 1 to coil, & 1 to the main wiring harness. One other problem was the wiring connector from the coil pushed in a pin when connected. I'm trying to figure out if pushing the pin in would have caused this short or if this is related to the original problem of what would have caused the starting problem. I don't really want to replaced the distributor if possible. I should be able to replace the module- should be under warranty, but I don't want to fry another.

I'd appreciate some advice.
