Low Oil Pressure Light - 2001 Expedition

I recently purchased a 2001 Ford Expedition. I have noticed, and mainly since it got colder out, that everytime I start my vehicle, my low oil pressure light comes on. I usually let my vehicle run for about 5-10 minutes, and then it goes off, and everything seems fine. This is killing me... any idea to what may be causing this? The oil was just changed so it has nothing to do with that..... any ideas??

My 2000 has the same problem. I happen to have an analog oil pressure guage and when the light is on the guage shows no pressure. Let me know if anyone gets an answer

Mine does that too. Typically turns off in a few minutes and then everything is normal. Probably has been doing that for over a year. Doesn't seem to be temp related since it does it in Phoenix in the summer, too.

I have a Ford Exp 2001 here in CA. I have the same problem for a year now. Oil pressure gauge only shows pressure when the truck is totally warmed up. Please post when you have a fix for it.

ford oil pressure sending units have been updated for this problem for several years and makes

Mine had the same problem. It's the oil-sending unit. Look for the sparkplug-looking doo-hickey with the wires coming from it located very close to the oil filter. Cheap fix. I think it's about $8-$9 at the local auto parts store.

I've had the same problem the last few months. Can I damage anything if I drive before the light goes off?

The issue with the light (in my case) is that the piece of equipment that tells the light to come on (the sending unit) was malfunctioning. The oil level was correct and the oil pump was pumping.

If the sending unit goes bad, your light will come on but you still have oil pressure and you will NOT do any damage to the engine.

If the oil pump goes bad, your light will come on (assuming the sending unit is good) and you WILL do damage to the engine.

I chose to replace the oil sending unit because it was a cheap, easy test to see if that was the source of the problem causing the low oil pressure indicator light coming on.
