What do you do first?

When you are drawing a car in a 3/4 type view what do you do first? Do you make 2 vanishing points and then make a box using those, and then change the shape of the box to be more like a car? or do you just start drawing?

What about from a side view? What lines do you draw first? Do you just draw from the front to back or something like that or do you draw some important lines first and work from there?

Thanks for you time!

Re: What do you do first?

3/4 view, I just sketch in the ellipses for the wheels then a blob in a car shape similar to the one Im drawing. Then work from there.
Side view, Pretty much the same, wheels first, then body shape then work on it.

What did I tell you before.

Anyway, good thread. I have two ways of doing it. Either I start out with a rough sketch of the whole thing, and then fill in the definates and details, or I start at the headlights or front wheel well and go from there.

HONU: You're not a mod, so please dont act like one.

I just start sketching. If its a hot rod, usually the wheel wells. then fenders.

Currently Im working on a 70 Cuda, at the view Im drawing it at Im using vanishing points, but its a pain in the ass.

Re: What do you do first?

Where was I acting like a mod!??

I was simply saying that someone started a thread and that alot of people already told. If he wanted to know where was most common, that would be a good resource.

Lately, whenever I try to help out, I'm accused of trying to be a mod? What am I doing?

I start with looking at the picture 10 minutes or so to get it in my brain. I'd say thats the most important part of all. You have complete control when you can draw a sketch from the car just from your brain. I then make lines and points everywhere to get a main orientation. I usually start with the side skirts and then the front bumper. It also helps to draw some lines that "cut" the car, to get a feel for the shape (e.g. the line in the center which goes from front bumper to engine howling, windshield, roof...)

Re: What do you do first?

Ellipses. The degree that you draw the ellipses determines the angle that you're drawing the car at. I start with the front ellipse.

Re: What do you do first?

I start mine like knightvision. I don't do the ellipses first, because if you don't space them properly the first time, it will throw the body off. But maybe with more experience this it the best way, because a lot of pros seem to do it. I'll give it another try next time.

You Can Use The Following For Any Angle Posible When Drawing A Car.
Try To See Everything In Straight Lines ........do A Quick Sketch Of The Car With Very Light Stright Lines....and Work From There Making The Curbes And Wheels Until You Get The Desired Shape. Don't Worry About Perspective Points At This Stage...there Are Books That You Can Study When You're Ready For That (once You Trained Your Eyes To See Different Shapes And You Can Visualize The Final Results Before You Start Drawing It).
